At the age of 56, Knight died of cancer on February 7, 2023.

In Overland Park, Kansas, Knight made his home. They divorced when her marriage to the late bodybuilder John Poteat ended. She also has a son named Malachi, multiple steps and in-law siblings, and three brothers named Timothy, Todd, and Travis.

Knight is still the only Ms International champion to have dropped a Ms International crown. 2011 saw her enshrined in the IFBB Hall of Fame.

After IFBB officials confronted Tonya with compelling proof that she had sent a surrogate to a mandated drug test conducted prior to the 1988 Ms. Olympia, where she placed fourth, she admitted that she had done so.

In a decision issued in November 1989, she was requested to return her $12,000 in prize money from the 1988 Ms Olympia and 1989 Ms International competitions. She was also suspended. Jackie Paisley, who finished in second place, received the 1989 Ms International title.
