Herb was born on June 8, 1937, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, to his parents Herbert L. Smith, Sr. and Anna M. Smith (Cook). He spent his formative years in Hannibal, New York, where he completed his high school education. Herb’s thirst for knowledge led him to pursue various educational opportunities, including Dade Jr. College, the University of Miami, Beaux Beauty School, SUNY Oswego, and SUNY Oswego, where he earned his BA in fine arts.

Army Career

In 1960, Herb embarked on a new chapter of his life by joining the Army. Throughout his military career, he displayed unwavering dedication and commitment. As an Army soldier, he underwent rigorous training exercises and attended numerous classes to enhance his skills. Herb’s leadership abilities were recognized, and he served as the battery commander at the Nike Hercules nuclear site near Los Angeles, California. He also held the rank of captain during his service in Vietnam. Later, he became the S-3 officer range command at Fort Bliss in Texas. Herb’s dedication to his country continued as he transitioned to the Army National Guard, where he achieved the rank of major in 1976.
