Does acupuncture work for lupus? | Northeast

People with lupus may want to try non-pharmacologic or alternative treatments to help ease pain throughout their body. Among those treatments is acupuncture, which originated in ancient China and involves pricking the skin or tissues with a needle to treat a wide variety of physical and mental conditions.

There is no science-based proof that acupuncture soothes pain caused by lupus. However, some people within the lupus community claim to have benefited from integrating the procedure into their care routine.

As you should when interested in trying any alternative treatment, if you want to try acupuncture for yourself, we recommend you first discuss with your doctor whether it’s right for you. They may be able to give you recommendations for qualified and licensed acupuncture practitioners – preferably someone who has experience working with people with lupus.
